Are dart frogs poisonous incaptivity?
No, captive-bred dart frogs are not poisonous. In the wild, their toxins come from their diet, which isn’t replicated in captivity.
Do dart frogs require special care?
Yes, they thrive in high-humidity environments and need a properly maintained vivarium. We ecommend live plants, proper lighting, and regular misting to keep them healthy.
What do dart frogs eat?
Dart frogs primarily eat small insects, like fruit flies, crickets, and springtails. All food should be dusted with vitamins and minerals regularly.
CanI keep more than one dart frog together?
Yes, many dart frogs do well in groups, but it’s essential to research compatibility and provide enough space and hiding spots. Juveniles (up to 10-15) can coexist in larger tanks, but adults should be housed in smaller groups to prevent stress and aggression. Typically, a pair of larger adults needs at least a 25-gallon tank, while smaller species
can thrive in 20 gallons.
How do you ship live animals?
We ship our frogs overnight in insulated boxes with heat or cold packs to ensure they arrive safely. We only ship when weather conditions are safe for live animals.
What is your live arrival guarantee?
We guarantee live arrival as long as someone is present to receive the package on the first delivery attempt. If any issues arise, contact us immediately with photos and unboxing videos.
Do you ship internationally?
Currently, we only ship within the U.S. territory. You can contact info@tesorosdecolombia.com for international shipping.
How do I maintain the right humidity and temperature?
Keep humidity above 70-80% with regular misting and maintain temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Using a misting system or humidifier can help. Please check each species requirements in product pages.
Do you offer habitat setup advice?
Yes! Imitate the rainforest environment by maintaining high humidity and lush vegetation. Incorporate appropriate plants, bark, wood, and substrates to design a realistic vivarium. We provide expert advice on setting up and caring for the perfect habitat in our blog section.
What is the Lifespan of Dart Frogs?
Wild Dart Frogs typically live 1 to 2 years. However, with proper care in captivity, they can live between 7 to 10 years on average.
How should I handle dart frogs safely?
We recommend minimizing direct handling of dart frogs, as they have sensitive skin that can absorb oils, chemicals, or contaminants from human hands. If you must handle them, always wash your hands thoroughly before and after and use powder-free nitrile gloves.
Are dart frogs safe to keep around children and pets?
Yes, captive-bred dart frogs are generally safe, as they are not poisonous in captivity. However, dart frogs are delicate and easily stressed, so they should be kept out of reach of young children and pets to prevent injury to the frogs.
What safety precautions should Itake when maintaining the vivarium?
·Use dechlorinated water when misting to avoid harming the frogs.
·Avoid using household cleaners, as harsh chemicals can linger in the habitat. Use frog-safe disinfectants when cleaning.
·When pruning plants or maintaining the enclosure, wear gloves to protect both yourself and the frogs.
·Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling anything from the vivarium to maintain good hygiene.
These steps help ensure the health of your dart frogs and reduce any risks to yourself or others.
What are the development stages of dart frogs?
Dart frogs go through several distinct life stages, known as metamorphosis:
a.Egg Stage: The female lays eggs in moist, sheltered areas. The male typically guards the eggs. Eggs hatch within 10-14 days under ideal conditions.
b.Tadpole Stage: Once hatched, the tadpoles are transferred to water sources like small pools or bromeliad leaves. They live entirely in water, feeding on algae and other organic material. This stage lasts 6-12 weeks.
c.Froglet Stage: Tadpoles begin to develop legs and
absorb their tails, transitioning from aquatic to land life. During this stage,
they move out of the water and start breathing air.
d.Adult Frog Stage: The froglets mature into adult dart
frogs, ready to live in the vivarium or their natural habitat. Full maturity
can take 6-12 months, depending on species, care, and
environment.
Are dart frogs aggressive?
Dart frogs are generally non-aggressive, but mild aggression can occur, especially among males competing for territory or mates. To reduce conflict, provide a spacious vivarium with plenty of hiding spots and limit the number of males in one enclosure.
What are the lighting needs for dart frogs?
Dart frogs thrive with low to moderate UVB lighting, which supports their health and plant growth in the vivarium. Use 12-hour light cycles to mimic natural day and night rhythms. LED or fluorescent lights with UVB are ideal, and be sure to avoid overly intense lighting, as dart frogs prefer shaded environments.
